The Purpose and Promises of God

God has a purpose for this world that he designed before time began. God called Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob into that plan and gave them promises to hold onto as they took steps of faith in active obedience. We also fit into God’s purpose as we walk by faith to wherever he takes us. Ultimately all of our stories point to the glory of God as he fulfills his plan in this world.

The Promises and Purpose of God

in the Lives of Abraham and Sarah

Hebrews 11:8-16

Paul Briggs

September 2, 2018

The name of Abraham appears in numerous places throughout the Bible. Without question, as evidenced by the space dedicated to his life and the number of times and places his name appears, Abraham is the quintessential example of faith in the Scriptures. However, there should be no mistaking that the life of Abraham teaches us, God’s people, about the promises and the purpose of God through the study of his life of faith.

The Call of Abram

Genesis 11:27-12:9

Abraham Cremeens

September 9, 2018

God has a purpose for this world that he designed before time began. God called Abram into that purpose and gave him promises to hold onto as he took steps of faith in active obedience. We also fit into Abram’s story as we take steps of faith, lean on God’s promises, and journey with God wherever he takes us. Ultimately all of our stories point to the glory of God as he fulfills his plan in this world through Jesus Christ.

Abram's Tent and an Altar

Genesis 12:10-13:18

Paul Briggs

September 16, 2018

In the book of Genesis, we find elements of the narrative regarding the life of Abram (and those who follow) that are...., well, nothing short of shocking. One of them is found in today’s passage. Even here at the beginning of the unfolding of the plan of redemption being worked out by God through his servant, Abram, our understanding is grown that God “...is...merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness....” (Exodus 34:6). God is faithful to his own purpose and promises, even when his chosen servants fail.

God's Purpose and Our Choices

Genesis 14

Abraham Cremeens

September 23, 2018

As Abram and Sarai continue in their walk with God they again find themselves in a difficult situation. A crisis takes place that impacts their nephew Lot. Abram responded to the crisis by getting involved and rescuing Lot. In the aftermath Abram is then confronted with a choice. Two kings interact with him. His reaction to one is to receive a blessing and his reaction to the other is to reject compromise. God’s purpose for his life is a driving value in the choice he made.

God's Purpose and Our Faith

Genesis 15

Abraham Cremeens

September 30, 2018

Yahweh is our covenant making God. He initiated the call on Abram’s life in chapter 12 and then makes his covenant with Abram. In his covenant God takes the emphasis and responsibility on himself. Abram responds in faith – he receives God’s grace by faith – and it is counted to him as righteousness.

God's Purpose and a Godward Life

Genesis 17-18:15

Abraham Cremeens

October 21, 2018

Both chapters (17 and 18) open with a statement about Yahweh appearing to Abraham. In both chapters, God shows his character and the fact that he is our covenant maker and promise keeper. In both chapters, Abraham and Sarah respond in a variety of ways. This passage is a snapshot of the Godward life: As God reveals himself we respond by following him.

The Justice and Mercy of God

Genesis 18:16-19:38

Will Peycke

November 11, 2018

God is the just Judge who punishes sin and the merciful Rescuer who spares the undeserving. He brought destruction on Sodom but rescued Lot. In Jesus, God judged sin once and for all, providing merciful rescue for undeserving sinners to be justified freely by his grace.

God's Purpose and Fear

Genesis 20

Abraham Cremeens

November 25, 2018

In Genesis 20 we see God show up again. Abraham feared the people of Gerar and lied about Sarah being his wife. This not only led to danger for Sarah but also created a predicament for the covenant line of God’s people. However, God was faithful even when Abraham was faithless. He rebuked Abimelech and brought about a reversal of the problem. He protected Sarah and preserved the covenant line of his people.

A Promised Child

Genesis 21:1-7

Stephen Weinkauf

December 2, 2018

In this greater narrative until of Genesis 11:27-21:7, God has brought Abraham and Sarah on a journey. They’ve struggled with the tension between their physical limitations and God’s promises. They’ve had highs and lows on this journey, but God has used all of that to bring them into a deeper faith and a deeper joy. As we walk through life, as we struggle to believe the promises we have in Christ, we can recognize that God is using the highs and lows of our life to bring us into deeper faith and deeper joy.

God’s Grace to the Rejected Son

Genesis 21:8-34

Stephen Weinkauf

January 6, 2019

As we continue the narrative of Abraham and Sarah, one thing is strikingly clear. God has been showing, and continues in chapter 21, to show Abraham great grace. This grace leads him to deeper faith. If someone asked Abraham, “What is the reason for the hope that is in you?” Abraham would likely answer, “God has shown me great grace.” God has shown us believers great grace too, through Christ. This can also be our answer when someone asks us this question.

The Purpose and Promises of God

Through Testing

Genesis 22

Gami Ortiz

January 13, 2019

In Genesis 22, God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his only son – the one through whom God’s promises would be fulfilled. Abraham had to make a decision between putting his trust in God’s promises or in God himself. Through Abraham’s obedience, we see God’s continuing faithfulness in sparing Isaac and reiterating his covenant with Abraham.

God’s Purpose and our Dependence

Genesis 24

Abraham Cremeens

January 20, 2019

In Genesis 24 we again see the sovereign hand of God as he continues to fulfill his purpose and promises. Abraham’s life is coming to a close and he sees a problem. His son, through whom the covenant line would continue, had no wife. If Abraham was to indeed be a blessing to all nations then something needed to change. God will do what he said he would do and he is kind enough to involve his people in the process. Dependent on God, Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. God providentially insures success.

God’s Purpose and Death

Genesis 23 & 25:1-18

Abraham Cremeens

January 27, 2019

It has been a good journey as we have traced out the lives of Abraham and Sarah. Now, we come to the close of that journey. They have lived lives of faith. Yes, they had their ups and downs, successes and failures. However, the outcome of their lives was never dependent on themselves. The outcome depended on a simple faith in an awesome God.

The Purpose and Promises of God for Families

Genesis 18:19

Will Peycke

February 3, 2019

God’s purpose for Abraham’s family was to establish a legacy of generational faithfulness that would bring blessing to the world. When we look at the first three generations of Abraham’s family, however, we see more failures than faithfulness. But God was still faithful to his promises.

God's Purpose and Sovereign Grace

Genesis 25:19-34

Abraham Cremeens

February 10, 2019

In Genesis 25.19-34 we see some incredible truths about God, truths that should draw us into worship and celebration. The first truth is that God is sovereign. He has the power to do anything and everything. He is also sovereign in salvation by choosing whom to save. This should lead us into worship and celebration of him even as we may have some unanswered questions on the subject. The second truth is that God is gracious. Yes, he is sovereign, but he is sovereignly good and gracious.

The Promise of God's Presence

Genesis 26

Stephen Weinkauf

February 17, 2019

Genesis 26 is the only chapter in the whole book that centers around Isaac. It gives us a good look into his life and what his life centered around, which is God’s presence. God promised Isaac that he will be with him, he is with him, and he has been with him. As Isaac grows in believing God’s presence, he grows in living in obedience and love for the LORD.

God's Purpose and Our Sin

Genesis 27-28:9

Abraham Cremeens

February 24, 2019

In this passage we again see God’s sovereign grace in the fact that he blesses the undeserving. Sin and the messiness of people is so prevalent but even more so is the grace of God. Jacob received the blessing even though he deceived his family to get it. We would wonder why God still allowed him to receive the blessing until we recall that all of God’s blessings are the result of his grace and not because we deserve them.

The Assurance of God’s Presence

Genesis 28:10-22

Will Peycke

March 3, 2019

In spite of all Jacob’s failures, the Lord appears to Jacob in a dream and promises to be with him. Jacob responds by worshiping God and vowing to serve him. Later, Jesus would explain that Jacob’s dream was really about him: Jesus is the ladder, the link between heaven and earth. Jesus is the one who makes it possible for God to be with sinful people like Jacob—and like us.

God's Purpose and Our Shame

Genesis 29:10-30:24

Abraham Cremeens

March 10, 2019

Ed Welch wrote: “Shame. You feel worthless, rejected, dirty and exposed. Sometimes you feel it because of what you have done [or] from something that has been done to you.” Shame speaks to our identity and always makes us feel broken and worthless. It permeates our culture and is present in our church. I want to talk about shame this morning but I want to put it into a context that I’m rather excited about – a God-shaped context. I believe that our shame can move toward healing and wholeness only when we bring it before God and his people. God wants to take our shame and heal it.

God's Purpose and Our Suffering

Genesis 30:25-31:55

Abraham Cremeens

March 17, 2019

In this passage we see that God is keeping his promises to Jacob. We also see some glimpses of hope in Jacob’s life. So far, we have only been aware of Jacob’s sin and messiness. However, that begins to shift. God is doing something in Jacob. He is shaping him by his grace even as he fulfills his promises in his life. We will trace out these next scenes of his life by asking: (1) What is God doing (particularly related to his promises)? (2) How is God shaping Jacob? In the end we will see that God always keeps his promises and changes his people along the way.

God’s Purpose in Our Helplessness

Genesis 32-33

Will Peycke

March 24, 2019

As Jacob is about to reenter the Promised Land, he fears retribution from Esau for Jacob’s previous trickery and deception. The overarching theme of this passage is Jacob’s reconciliation with Esau. But the underlying theme is how Jacob finally “overcomes” through humility and dependence on God. Before self-sufficient Jacob can enter the Promised Land, God needs to humble him so he will rely on God instead of on himself.

Worldliness: A Real and Present Danger

Genesis 34

Paul Briggs

March 31, 2019

Loving the world is a real and present danger for the believer in Jesus. Human nature without God along with the effects of it in daily living take center stage in Genesis 34. The Gospel leads the follower of Christ to a radically different response to evil and the perpetrators of it.

God's Purpose and Our Participation

Genesis 35

Abraham Cremeens

April 7, 2019

In this passage we see that God is fulfilling his purpose and his promises and God graciously allows us to participate in his plan. Related to the first point, God has brought Jacob back to his home and multiplied him along the way as evidenced in twelve sons. Related to the second point, Jacob continues to pursue God and follow him as evidenced in repentance, obedience, and worship.
