If you'd like to host 4-5 other Builders for dinner sometime during the month of March, contact Emily Rummel. More details to come...

Meals for Mitti

We've discussed in this newsletter the past several weeks that one of our priorities is caring for those within our class. But sometimes those within the larger body of KSBC face trials that take the larger body to care for them.

Could you provide a meal to Steve and Mitti Wilson while she is undergoing chemo?

If you don't know the Wilsons, bringing them a meal is a great way to introduce yourself. If you don't know Steve and Mitti, you might know their daughter, Beth, who is part of the Builders.

You can see what days are available for meals by visiting their Meal Train.

Housing for a Conference

There are some folks coming from out of town to attend the Faith Counseling Conference that could use some housing.

They need beds & showers only for February 12-17 for four people.  They can bring air mattresses if needed.  The group of 4 break down this way: pastor, 1 woman and 1 couple.

Please email John Haller (jellis3d@gmail.com) if you'd like to help out with this opportunity.
MonMondayJanJanuary30th2012 Meals for Michael Stoup
Michael Stoup his having surgery tomorrow (Tuesday, January 31). Please pray for Michael tomorrow during the surgery and for his recovery.

You can demonstrate our love and care for Michael by bringing him a meal. We're just doing 4 meals starting Thursday.

Builders in 2012 - Part 4 - We Serve

As a group of believers we are called to care for those that are within our group. But we are also called to serve our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ outside of our group and also the world at large.

One simple opportunity that we have to serve fellow believers and the world at the same time is the International Lunch. About once a semester, our class has the privilege of preparing lunch and hosting the Salt and Light Christian Fellowship International group. This lunch provides an opportunity for us to show hospitality to international students and also encourage our brothers and sisters ministering to them.

TueTuesdayJanJanuary17th2012 Builders Lunch Details - January 22
More details about the Builders lunch this Sunday, January 22 and a reminder to signup.

When is it? Sunday, January 22 after the second worship service is done. If PDW goes too long and you start to smell food just sneak out the back when he looks at the other side of the room.

Where is it? In the Builders classroom (upstairs) and the adjoining Koinonia classroom (we'll open up the wall that divides us).

What will we eat? It's a surprise (which just means we don't know yet). But we are ordering food so we need you to signup so we have enough but also don't waste money buying too much.

How long will it last? Not very long, I'm hoping 30-45 minutes tops. I've got a pregnant wife and a 3 year old. Trust me, no one understands the importance of getting home after church quickly to get an afternoon nap more than me.

What will we do? Besides eating of course, several of the Builders leaders will be sharing changes in our leadership structure, the structure of our Sunday morning hour, and we'll also have a preview of our study topic for the coming 8 weeks.

Who can come? Builders "regulars", people that have never come to an ABF, or people who think their fit in their current ABF isn't that great (yes, I'm not afraid to steal people from other ABFs, which means I'm probably OK if you are a Builders regular and you think God might be calling you to another ABF). Kids are welcome too. Do you know someone that fits into one of those categories? Invite them! Don't just assume they already know about this or are planning on coming. "Hey, are you coming to the lunch on Sunday?"

Builders in 2012 - Part 2 - We Care

A natural outpouring of the fellowship that we as a Builders class are called to have by God is caring for each other. The care we provide to one another is our demonstration of what we teach and believe.

In the Builders class care often occurs in the form of food. It could be taking meals to someone after they have a baby or have been sick. As someone that has received meals from you all before, I will admit that the food itself is nice and very tasty! It really is a relief, more than I expected, to not have to plan and prepare a meal when something big has happened.

But more than the food, I was overwhelmed with the generosity of so many people willing to help us out. Some of those people we had known for years but some we had only met a few times (but have since gone on to know much better).

Sheryl Hodson coordinates the "big" care opportunities for our class. But often much of the care just happens without anyone knowing because as we are all involved in each others lives care doesn't have to be coordinated, it just happens.

Taking on lions

This is a cool 2 minute video about 3 guys taking on 15 lions. But I also really liked Mikey Anderson's observations.

Builders in 2012 - Part 2 - We Fellowship

Fellowship is a pretty common word to hear around our church. It must be pretty important if it is the name of our group, Builders Adult Bible Fellowship. But what does it mean?

Honestly, when Jessica and I first came to Kossuth I thought that fellowship was the Christian term for hanging out. There were "fellowship" events and they were a lot like hanging out with my friends in college. We would play games, eat dinner, or go to an event together.

But as I've been around Kossuth over the years, as I've read the scriptures, learned from our teachers, and most importantly as God has opened my eyes, I now see that biblical fellowship is meant to be so much more. That doesn't mean any of those activities are bad, just don't fool yourself into checking the "fellowship" box because you attend an event.

Our word fellowship comes from the Greek word koinonia. (side note: one of the ABF classes is named Koinonia, we should probably ask those guys about this fellowship stuff!). Koinonia is used in the Scriptures to show people sharing together, living in community together, and participating in a activities together.

But those kinds of things can happen in lots of different organizations, not just the church. Let's look at how it is described in the book of Acts.

[42] And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. [43] And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. [44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common. [45] And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

(Acts 2:42-47 ESV)

There is a lot in this short passage! I don't have time to go into every point, but look at what the passage describes as the results of their fellowship. The believers had glad and generous hearts and they praised God which resulted in God blessing them and adding to their number, which I have to believe would have resulted in more worship to God. Fellowship is a vicious cycle!

The key with biblical fellowship then is that it is enabled by the Holy Spirit and what we share together is Jesus Christ. That is what makes fellowship exclusive to Christians. So the key to fellowship is to start with God. The relationships with other believers will naturally follow.

The book "Why Small Groups" has a great section on fellowship. I'd encourage you all to read it (buy a copy or ask around, there are quite a few copies floating around the church).

Shameless plug for small groups: Another reason you might feel that you don't have deep enough biblical fellowship is that you aren't in a small group. Our ABFs (despite the name) with how they are currently structured are not the best format for fellowship. Small groups are though! (This is strictly Mikel's opinion only. Others may disagree. I'm just a big cheerleader for small groups.)

Builders in 2012 - Part 2 - We Welcome

Welcoming people new to Kossuth and new to our class is something we want to improve on this semester. Each of us can remember the first Sunday we were in the Builders ABF. Maybe you were welcomed by a friendly face or maybe you sat down, didn't talk to anyone, and left as soon as the teaching was over. Either way, God used something or someone to keep you coming back.

We want to be more intentional about welcoming people. We'll have some more organized and structured times for doing this. If we say we value something but don't provide any time for it to happen, do we really value it?

Starting in February at the start of class, John Sprunger will do announcements, lead a time of sharing and prayer, and have some ice-breaker or get-to-know-you activities.

But welcoming people isn't John's job. He's just providing an opportunity for you all to be welcoming and to get to know someone. And the only opportunity to welcome someone isn't just on their first Sunday.

Get to church early, drop off the kids, get your coffee, and find a seat by 9:25 so that you can use the first 15 minutes of class well. Because you can't have fellowship (which is next week's topic) with someone if you don't even know their name.

Builders in 2012

Tim, Matt, and I have been thinking, praying, and talking with many of you to evaluate if the structure and activities of the Builders class are still aligned with the goals of the Adult Bible Fellowship classes at Kossuth.

Based on your feedback and our observations, we don't think that we're far off but that the balance of things have drifted over time. So starting in February you'll notice some changes. I'm going to take the weekly newsletters between now and then to explain what those will be and the thoughts behind them.

To start with, here's my attempt at a summary or "mission" statement.

The Builders ABF exists to bringing glory to Christ by being a smaller community within the larger body of KSBC that welcomes, has fellowship, cares, serves, and teaches God's word to each other.

Over the next couple of weeks I'll provide a lot more details. However, at any time feel free to email me (mjb@mjberger.com) or call (765-490-6321) if you have feedback or questions.

I want to end this newsletter with one passage that I believe summarizes our desires for the Builders.

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. (Romans 12:9-13 ESV)

Christopher Hitchens

The outspoken atheist passed away recently. This obituary by Douglas Wilson is really good, but I found this particular section about Hitchens preparing for his death bed especially so.

In a number of interviews during the course of his cancer treatments, he discussed the prospect of a "death bed" conversion, and it was clear that he was concerned about the prospect. But, he assured interviewers, if anything like that ever happened, we should all be certain that the cancer or the chemo or something had gotten to his brain.

This is something I haven't considered before. If someone is an atheist their entire life but repents on their death bed we rejoice that God has saved another "thief on the cross." Sadly, this doesn't appear to have been the case for Christopher Hitchens. But what if the reverse happened? What if a strong believer their entire life denounces Christ on their death bed? I'm sure I'd want to consider them still a believer but that some outside force (i.e. cancer, drugs, etc.) had affected their "right" mind.

When we're back together in February we're going to be looking at the life of Hezekiah. We'll see where the Lord leads as the teachers prepare for this series, but questions finishing strong and not finishing well would be great ones to ask when Matt or Tim are teaching!

Seniors Luncheon

This year for the Seniors Luncheon on December 17, each ABF has been asked to provide some aspect of the luncheon.  The Builders class was assigned goody bags.  The plan is to include an apple or pear and some Christmas themed candy.  The bags and paper for making tags have been provided.  I am asking that each family provide either a bag of Christmas themed candy or if you don’t want to shop, you can give me a couple dollars to put toward getting the apples and pears.  The candy needs to be to church by December 11th.  We will be looking for volunteers to assemble the bags sometime that week.  There will be a sign-up sheet in class this Sunday or you can contact Sheryl at Sheryl@mshodson.com to sign up.

FriFridayNovNovember25th2011 Prayer request

Builders,
Please pray for Mikel and Jessica Berger. Mikel's Dad passed away this past Tuesday morning. While this was unexpected and  is a great loss to the family, they are taking comfort in knowing he was saved. In Mikel's words, "God is still good and called him home."

The services will be held in Nappanee, Indiana:
Viewing -  Friday, 11/25, 2 - 8pm at Thompson Lengagcher funeral home on SR 19
Funeral - Saturday 11/26, 10:30 at Nappanee United Methodist on SR 6.

I apologize for this getting out so late. Mikel usually manages this news letter so I have had to learn the tech side. After several tries, I hope you get it. Sorry if you received duplicates.

We will keep you updated as we can, along with whatever needs may arise over the next few days.

Dear Builders,

As promised, here is the address for my blog - I'd love to keep up with you, too, so let me know how to stay in contact! (My contact info is below.)

It is: http://aglassdarkly.wordpress.com

I'll be heading out on Monday for Wycliffe Bible Translator's jungle aviation center (JAARS - http://www.jaars.org) in North Carolina. They provide support and logistics for jungle pilots who deliver missionaries, supplies, and medicines to remote areas, in support of Bible translation. Plus, jungle pilots are some of the coolest people ever, so I'll be trying to collect stories to post on my blog. I'll be volunteering with the engineering coordinator for a month in an as-yet-unspecified position.

I would very much appreciate your prayers - please let me know how I can be praying for you, too! I also need to thank you for the wonderful family that y'all have been to me over the past two years, as I completed my graduate studies. Your conversation, love, and encouragement (and food) have helped me grow in ways I would never have expected. I'm sad to leave, but I'm confident that you will continue to impact each other, as you have me. Thanks for letting me build with you!

In Him,
Arin

  • Corporate Worship (8:00 and 10:45 am) - PDW will be in Isaiah 14:22-27 this Sunday.

International Meal

The Builders/International ABF lunch is Sunday (November 13). Make sure to have all of your donations in the kitchen before ABF. Reminder that help is needed after ABF to setup tables and chairs. Most importantly, stick around after second service to eat and be a friendly face!

An Experiment - The Table

Just a reminder to signup for The Table. If you need the info you can get it in class this Sunday.

Progressive Dinner with the youth

If you're new to the Builders class and you haven't figured it out yet, we have a lot of events that involve food! Our next one is going to be on Saturday, December 10. We'll be hosting a progressive dinner with the youth.

To start we're looking for 3-4 people/families to host. We're expecting 25-30 youth to attending, so your studio apartment might not be the best fit. But if you have a studio apartment, then you can still be involved. Find out who is hosting and volunteer to come over to their house to help them cook, clean, and just hang out with the youth while they are there.

We'll have more details in the coming weeks but mark the date on your calendar.

Erin Louise Rummel

Praise God along with Andy and Emily at the birth of Erin Louise! She arrived on Wednesday at 9:42 pm weighing in at 7lbs 6oz and 19 1/14" tall. Mom, baby, and (presumably) older brothers Alex, Adam, and Dad are all doing well.

More info soon on caring for the Rummels by providing meals (see, more food!) will be coming soon.
MonMondayNovNovember7th2011 International Lunch Help Needed
There are still some needs for the lunch with the International ABF class this Sunday, November 13 after second service.
  • 6 boxes of crackers (2 boxes a person)
  • 6 lbs of cheese cubes (one person brings 2 lbs)
  • 2 dozen cookies/bars
We also can use some monetary donations to help cover the cost of some fruit. Please drop off all donations before ABF on Sunday. If you are bringing soup it needs to be labeled, plugged in, and turned on to at least low.

Lastly, we need help setting up tables between ABF and second service.

You can contact Allison Starr to let her know what you can bring (allisonmaestarr@yahoo.com)

During the lunch jump right in line, start up a conversation with someone not in the Builders, and sit down with them.

Lord willing, there will be about 100 people at the lunch on Sunday. We have a really unique opportunity to do something together as a class to serve the international students and others in our church. Please find a way to get involved.

An Experiment - The Table

You (the entire Builders class) have been volunteered for an experiment at our church. That happens when both of the technology and communiations deacons (Matt Hodson and me) are in your class.

Matt and I are investigating a new piece of technology called The Table to see if it can help facilitate communication within our church family. Communication across the entire church and within smaller groups (ABF, small group, a specific ministry team, or just an ad-hoc group of people who come together around a common interest).

We want to see how it might work with an ABF sized group. So we're going to ask all of the regular attenders to the Builders to signup. We'll have more information and the signup details in class on  Sunday.

The following 8 weeks our study is titled 66/40/1. The Bible is not simply 66 books penned by 40 authors over thousands of years, the Bible is an integrated whole of one message from God.  This study will help build an understanding of what the Bible is as well as its ultimate source, God

Builders Retreat

Mark your calendars, start lining up babysitters, and get your homework/research done early. Saturday, September 10 is going to be a Builders ABF retreat!

This year we will again be at the home of Andy and Emily Rummel just north of Lafayette. However, we'll only be retreating for one day. Mostly likely from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. We'll have a speaker with a couple of lessons, lunch together, and some other fun activities like beach volleyball and giant slip and slide.

More details to come.

Its time for our annual 4th of July party! We will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and lemonade. Please bring a side dish, dessert and chairs. If you have kids, bring their swimsuits and play clothes as we will have the sprinklers going and they can play in the sandbox and playset. Matt will set off his annual fireworks. Feel free to bring fireworks to contribute or sparklers to add to the annual sparkler bomb!

Help Arwen Move

Reminder about the packing party to help Arwen on June 30.

Thursday June 30 I will be loading up all of our worldly belongings.  I have some family help but I would appreciate all the help I can get.  The plan is to start around 10:00am and hopefully be done before dinner.  Food (probably fried chicken) and drinks will be provided for lunch.  Hopefully the more hands available the faster it will get done.  We have a lot of lighter items that just need 2 people to carry and several that need 2 or more strong people to carry.  :)  I'd like a head count so that I can tell my grandma (who's getting the food for us) how much food to get.  My address is 1023 S. 2nd St (Kossuth to 4th St, up the 4th st hill to Owen, right on Owen, right on 2nd St) and they can reach me at 765-477-6257.

Thanks!

SatSaturdayJunJune18th2011 Help Arwen Pack - June 30
I received the following note from Arwen. For those of you that don't know, Benj and Arwen have been a part of the Builders class for years but they are moving to Iowa. Benj moved out at the beginning of the month to start his new job. Arwen could use some help packing up for their move.

  • Corporate Worship - I'm sending the newsletter a little later than usual, so I actually know what Pastor Whipple will be preaching about this weekend. The first sentence from his notes is this: "What are you full of"? Should be a great sermon from Ephesians 5:15-21.

July 4th Party

Matt and Sheryl Hodson have invited the Builders class out to their place to celebrate America by blowing up a small part of it!

We are all invited to their house for a cookout and some fun together on July 4. The Hodsons will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and buns and lemonade.  Everyone brings a side, dessert, chairs and fireworks (optional).

Vocation: Discerning Your Calling

I thought this was a great article and reminded me of our Work series that we did in January/February this year.

  • Builders ABF - We're not meeting! Find an institute class to be a part of this summer. Enjoy the opportunity to learn from a different teacher, sit next to someone new, and study a new topic. The one thing you can't do is coast through this summer and land back in the Builders ABF in August.
  • Corporate Worship - PDW and his Bible will be up front again. We're hitting the home stretch of Ephesians.

Skalon Meals

I sent out the email about meals for Tom and Amber earlier in the week. I just checked the care calendar because I was expecting to have to include a reminder asking for a few more people to signup. But I just checked and all the meals are already taken. I repent of my pessimistic attitude and rejoice along with the Skalons and God at how loving and caring you all are as a class. It might seem like a little thing, but it's stuff like this that makes my day. Thanks guys!

And if you went to sign up and all the dates were taken, you just better be faster next time.

1 Corinthians Father's Day Commission

On the first day of each month Tim Challies posts a batch of desktop wallpapers on his blog. They generally have images and words that focus on a passage of scripture or an attribute of God that is relevant for what will happen in that month.

On Wednesday I was checking out the batch for June and I picked the one called "A Father's Day Commission" by Zack Kirby. In it he uses 1 Cor 16:13-14 that we just studied last week.

"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."

A great couple of verses, but very interesting to think of in the light of the title "A Father's Day Commission".

1 Corinthians Scripture Memory

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. For "the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof." If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. (1 Corinthians 10:23-31 ESV)

Children's Department Summer Help

Passing along the following note from Connie Williams...

I am looking for a sub for myself for the summer quarter during Sunday School.  I basically greet visitors, put toys away, assist in potty breaks, serve as hall monitor, etc.  I arrive downstairs at 8:45.

Jerry Smelser and I will be taking turns in this area during Children's Church, so we will be able to sit in service once in a while.

If you can sub one month, or two, or three, (June, July, August), that would be very helpful.  Please pray about it and let me know what you decide.  Thank you!

Blessings,
Connie Williams

Bible Doctrine Study

Pastor Whipple is leading a study group of Wayne Grudem's Bible Doctrine (I've mentioned this book a couple of times in class). They meet on Monday mornings at the church from 7:00 - 8:00 am. Several Builders teachers are joining up with the group and we'd love to have a few more join us. If you'd like to come, email Pastor Whipple at don@ksbc.net to let him know.
