Hello, Salt & Light!

This week at ABF Marty Dittmar spoke on James 5:7-13. When pressure comes on through suffering, we easily turn on those we love, but we should avoid this. "Try harder" is not the answer, but "train better" is. Look back to Scripture to do this better training. God has given us the example of prophets and others to show us how to live patiently on this earth.

This Week
  • Tuesday, 4/24 at 7pm - Prayer and Praise at the Lighthouse
  • Wednesday, 4/25 at 6:45 - Prayer Meeting at the Church
  • Friday, 4/27 at 6:30pm - End of Year Dinner at Puccini's
Future

Annual Formal Dinner - Mark your calendars for a very special night at Puccini's with everyone from Salt & Light. We will be dressing up in our best formal attire, enjoying fellowship over some Pizza, ceremony-ing the loss of our Senior students, and eating dessert at the Mussers. There will be no expectation for you to have a date. Orders at Puccini's will be individual. David Wilson will be planning rides for this event; and Andrew Swinehart needs your Salt & Light pictures for a slideshow. This will be a great time for everyone, so you should probably definitely come. 6:30pm, April 27th. Be there.

Formal Dinner Questions: We are going to have some time to share what we have learned this semester on Friday at the formal, so take some time to do some introspection and notes review and reflect on how God has graciously blessed you and what wonderful things He has taught you. Use the questions below as a guide to get you thinking. And after you do this reflection, share some of it with the group on Friday! It will be encouraging to hear what you've learned and how God has moved this semester!

1. Where were you spiritually at the beginning of this semester? How are you doing now? How did you grow to get there?
2. How has your view of God changed? What sins have you been convicted of?
3. How have you developed in experiencing grace through discipline (ie Scripture memory, quiet times, prayer, biblical time management, intentional and missional living)?
4. How will this summer look differently than last summer in light of how you have grown?

Annual Silver Dipper Get Together - Take a break from finals with us to eat some delicious ice cream at the Silver Dipper. Don't forget, though, they only take Cash!

Summer Book Recommendation: In Paul Briggs' ABF talk two weeks ago, he suggested that we read "Just Do Something" by Kevin DeYoung. This is a challenge to SLCF to do just that. Let's read together! It is pretty short.

Hello, Salt & Light!

This week at ABF we heard from the Hornbrooks who are missionaries to Mexico City. In addition to hearing of the many lives God is changing in Mexico City, we heard of the Hornbrooks' need to remain confident in the Gospel and of questions over where their church will be held when the building they are currently renting is sold. Prayers for the Hornbrooks would be appreciated.

Hello, Salt & Light!

This week at ABF we looked at James 5:1-6. After an excited debate on whether it was addressed to believers or unbelievers, it was concluded that, either way, believers can fall into the sins of hoarding earthly possessions, harming/neglecting others to get ahead and self-indulgence. Even now, we should use our resources for God, not ourselves.

Encouragement Week starts on April 22nd. Everyone who registers will get the name of someone else to encourage. Try to do something encouraging for them everyday. Hello, Salt & Light!

This week at ABF, we talked about Intentionality and the Will of God, as seen in James 4:13-17. We heard about how it is our human tendency to be prideful and to think that tomorrow will certainly go according to our plans, but thinking like this is evil. A careful student of Scripture, however, will notice that our "life is a mist which...vanishes" and that we ought to give God the credit he deserves regarding control of how life events turn out.

Hello, Salt & Light!

This week at ABF, we talked about Seeking Counsel and examined instances where counsel was sought in passages such as I Kings 12:1-24 and Exodus 18:13-27. We mentioned the importance of listening to counsel even when it is not asked for and the importance of asking experienced people as well as asking both those who know you and those who think differently than you do.

Special - At prayer and praise tonight we looked at passages that talked about our value of gathering with the local church. Going to Family Gathering (4/1 at 6pm) could be a great way to apply what we studied. Here are the passages if you want to study further: John 17:20-23, 1 Cor. 12:12-13, Eph. 3:8-10,20-21, Heb. 10:24-25, Heb. 13:17
Other good ones: Acts 2:44-47, Acts 20:28, Matt. 18:15-17, 1 Cor. 5:12-13
And an excellent article on membership.

Service Opportunity - Kari and Abraham will be tackling some spring cleaning and minor repairs at their home, this Saturday.  They have asked us if anyone would be interested in lending a hand for this.  Items include washing windows, other cleaning, watching Liam, mowing, removing Christmas lights, landscaping, etc. Please email them at abrahamandkari@gmail.com.  They will begin around 10:30am and provide lunch to any helpers.
