Lions can be fierce and powerful. Most of us would much rather see a lion in the zoo, on a safari ride or on television than up close and unprotected. In Proverbs, the sluggard uses the unlikely presence of a lion outside as a reason to stay inside and not work. If there was a lion in the streets, it is best to be cautious and protected. Peter uses the ferociousness and fear of the lion to describe the ways of our enemy the devil. A lion on the prowl looking for someone to devour . . . we have seen enough national geographic videos to know that lions devouring anything, especially people, is not a pretty sight.
